For those sampling tissue and soil independently of Project personnel.
- Collect small equivalent amounts at each of the 20 locations where and when corn tissue is sampled.
- Use a clean, steel sampling instrument. A soil probe is best, but a shovel or trowel will work.
- If soil is too wet to till, it is best to wait for dryer conditions.
- Sample to 6 or 8 inches with conventional tillage or to 4 inches with conservation / no-till.
- Place the 20 samples into a clean plastic bucket. Avoid using metal buckets or containers.
- Thoroughly mix, break up clumps, and remove any large trash. If soil is wet, let air dry somewhat before mixing and always before putting into a sample box.
- Use NCDA&CS sample boxes available at Extension offices and the NCDA&CS Agronomic Services Division in Raleigh. We will also include them in optional Project Sampling/Shipping packets available later in the season for those who wish.
- Fill sample box to the fill line.
- Use permanent black ink (e.g., Sharpie) to label the box, including .
- Complete the pre-filled SOIL SAMPLE INFORMATION form available HERE
- Close box flaps securely to prevent spillage during shipment.
- Write “PROBLEM SAMPLES” on shipping box.
We suggest you store sample boxes in a dry place until all four are collected, then ship to NCDA&CS using a prepaid USPS Flat Rate Box that we can supply if you wish.
